Between earth and fire, between gesture and technique, this course offers a complete immersion in the world of ceramic sculpture, in the heart of the Schist Village of Cerdeira, where proximity to nature, silence and the rhythm of the place enhance the artistic process.
Over ten days, participants will be accompanied by Renato Costa e Silva and Kerstin Thomas — sculptors, ceramists, researchers and storytellers — who will share their artistic experience and their view of ceramics as a living and expressive material.
The course begins with an introduction to clay formation and the ceramic process, providing essential foundations for each participant to make informed decisions about the types of clay, techniques and firing options best suited to their projects. From there, space is opened up for different approaches to sculpture, from figurative to abstract, exploring proportions, expressiveness and form construction.
Various techniques will be explored, including:
- expressive modelling, with a special focus on the human face
- slab construction, which involves planning, drawing and structure
- exploration of shapes created on the potter's wheel, integrated into sculptural compositions
At the same time, there will be time dedicated to the development of individual projects, with close supervision from the trainers, ensuring personalised technical and artistic guidance.
The entire course culminates in one of its most memorable moments: wood-fired firing in the Sasukenei - Smokeless Kiln.
