Schist Walking Trail of Barroca

While walking this Schist Trail you will have the chance to discover surprising hidden corners of Zêzere, either from the hill top of Senhora da Rocha or the water level side tracks, including pass by the rock engraving located in the river bed.

Start by filling up your water bottle in the Ribeiro da Bica fountain and prepare yourself for the major trail challenge: the Senhora da Rocha chapel climb. From where you have a different overlooking view of the village and river.
If you don't feel like climbing the hill just take the PR1.1 variant through the narrow village streets and you will shortcut to the river bridge. But if you accepted the chapel challenge, take some rest and start going down carefully by the same way you came up.

After crossing the river go left to visit the rock engraving and backtrack to follow up river.
Arriving to the bridge, cross it and climb in the road for a few hundred meters until entering back on the trail, next to the old mine heaps, that will take you back to Barroca using the ancient miner's trail.

Arriving to the village the trail does a little detour to pass by a small bridge where you will find some old stone water mills.

Theme houses
In Fundão there is a rout in which some the oldest traditions of the region are represented, united by a group of four theme houses: Casa do Mel (Honey House) with bee harvesting practices, visits to bee houses and observation of the whole process of honey extraction; The Casa das Tecedeiras of Janeiro de Cima shows how the ancient art of weaving on a traditional loom can be combined with modern textile designs; the Casa do Cogumelo (Mushroom House), a laboratory producing delicious species; Casa do Bombo (Drum House), celebrating the tradition of drum playing, where you can experience live and real the powerful percussion instrument that is so alive in these people's hearts.
