Fajão Schist Walking Trail

Fajão Schist Walking Trail

The Fajão Walking Trailis is a loop around Fajão village.

The route takes you through the Natura Network protected area of Açor Mountain. It contours in a balcony standing high in one of the Ceira River valley slopes, before climbing to reach Penedos de Penalva crest, with outstanding landscapes and rocky ground. The final section is downhill to the village of Fajão, that appears in a hidden corner of the hill.

Pontos de Interesse

Fajão bridge
Around Fajão, the breathtaking, rocky landscape of Ceira River is a constant companion, always present and refreshing. Decorated at places with windmills and stone houses, or presenting its clear waters for a bath, like for instance the Fajão bridge, from which you can see “Gola Grande” (a rocky reference in the landscape). Here time stands still and mirrors in the water. It's a great place for fishing.

Penedos de Fajão
The Penedos de Fajão are rocks sprouting from the ancient Iberian base, forming magnificent shapes sculpted by nature, giving a dramatic background on the horizon of Fajão. It is almost mandatory to climb up to the top of these mountains, from which you can see afar the silhouettes of the neighbouring mountains and deep valleys, as well as the characteristic rocks forming the shape of a dragon's back. The steep hills are a fantastic opportunity for enthusiastic climbers. Next to “Pedra que Abana” (shaking rock) the eye looses sight of the immense valley descending all the way to the bridge of Fajão.
